Rest/Sleep Policy
Aim:
To provide a period of time during the day for children to rest and recuperate from the mornings activities – based on individual needs.
To encourage self help skills in rest and sleep time procedures.
Explanation:
Sleep and rest times are pleasant occasions for the children in which they are encouraged to develop independence and take the rest appropriate to their individual needs. These needs are best met when families are consulted regularly. This allows for continuity of routines both at home and while in care.

Explanation:
Sleep and rest times are pleasant occasions for the children in which they are encouraged to develop independence and take the rest appropriate to their individual needs. These needs are best met when families are consulted regularly. This allows for continuity of routines both at home and while in care.
Implementation:
- Families are asked to share their knowledge about their child’s individual needs in regard to sleep and resting.
- Child appropriate music is used for relaxation as a part of the rest/sleep routine for consistency and personal comfort for the children.
- Children may bring a favorite soft toy, pillow, blanket or doll to take onto their bed.(safe sleeping practices are to be maintained)
- Educators may spend time with children to assist them to sleep.
- Children who do not sleep will be encouraged to rest while other children are going off to sleep.
- Quiet activities are then provided for children who do not go to sleep.
- Children sleeping on a mattress provide their own linen for rest time (to be taken home each week and laundered) whereas babies sleeping in cots have their linen provided and laundered at the Centre.
- Notify management when child does not provide sheet
- All cots and beds are thoroughly cleaned & sanitised after each child uses it.
- Children sleep until they wake of their own accord unless families specifically request to wake their child after a given sleep time or for supervision reasons.
- The recommended sleeping position for infants is on their back with their feet placed at the end of the cot
- Infants will not be given a bottle to feed themselves in bed.
- The room should be comfortable at all times
- Pillows, doonas and bumper pads should not be placed in infant’s cots.
- Children that fall asleep on their own free will, will be allowed at least 30 minutes of sleep before being woken as a part of our duty of care.
- 5 minute sleep checks are conducted in all rooms where children are sleeping.
- No necklaces of any kind are to be worn whilst sleeping.
- If a child is brought into our service asleep, as part of our duty of care, educators will wake the child before the parent/carer leaves to ensure the child’s safety and wellbeing.
